In and around Sivakasi, the handmade, non-mechanized Small Scale Sectors and Tiny Sectors manufacture about 67% of the total production of matches in India.

Potassium chlorate being a major raw material in the manufacture of safety matches, we supply many of these units in Sivakasi with KClO3. In 2005, Vaigai sponsored the creation of a safety match cluster under the umbrella of the Apex Match Consortium India.
